What children learn in Year 2 maths

Year 2 completes Key Stage 1, usually for children aged 6 to 7. By the end of the year, the National Curriculum expects pupils to know the number bonds to 20 and to be precise in using and understanding place value.

Children work with two-digit numbers as tens and ones, compare and order numbers to 100 using <, > and =, and add and subtract two-digit numbers mentally and with objects. They learn the 2, 5 and 10 times tables with their division facts, recognise odd and even numbers, and find ⅓, ¼, 2/4 and ¾ of shapes and amounts.

In measurement they use standard units (cm, m, g, kg, ml, litres), combine pounds and pence, and tell the time to five minutes. They also describe properties of shapes and read simple pictograms and tally charts.

Key goals for Year 2 include:

  • Recall addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently
  • Know the 2, 5 and 10 times tables
  • Understand the place value of two-digit numbers
  • Find simple fractions of amounts, such as ¾ of 12
