What children learn in Year 3 English
In Year 3, children start Key Stage 2 and write longer, more varied sentences. A big focus is joining ideas with a wider range of conjunctions, such as when, if, because and although, and using conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to show time and cause.
Children also learn more prefixes and suffixes, begin to use the present perfect tense (“he has gone out to play”) and start to organise writing into paragraphs. The Years 3 and 4 programme of study is shared, so schools can teach some of this content in either year.
Key goals for Year 3 include:
- use conjunctions such as when, if, because and although to join clauses
- use prefixes and suffixes and know how to add them
- begin to use paragraphs to group related ideas
- use the present perfect form of verbs
